Usually we think of sweaters, scarves, hot chocolate, and spending time with family, but what about dry skin? During the winter months we often neglect our skin by hiding it away under long sleeves and pants. We cover our feet with thick socks and boots and our hands with gloves and often jump straight from the shower into comfy pajamas. Cold weather outside and turning the heat on inside will both cause the skin to dry out. Then throw in the fact that you’re not keeping up with your moisturizer and sunscreen regimen from the warmer months and pretty soon your skin is dry, itchy and cracked. To make sure your skin weathers the cold as well as the rest of you, don’t skip your daily skin care routine and make sure you are using a nice heavy body butter or even oil. It’s best to apply your cream or oil of choice within 3 minutes of getting out of the bath or shower. Speaking of showers, don’t let yours get too hot as that can strip your skin of moisture. Then of course there’s the obvious dietary advice of drinking plenty of fluids and cutting down on caffeine. Having an extra cup of coffee can be tempting on a chilly morning, but caffeine is a diuretic and can leach your body of precious hydration. Just because you’ve covered it up, don’t let your skin be forgotten. Healthy skin is an important part of a healthy you.

If you’re going to be traveling in the Sedona area this winter, practice great skin care at the Hilton Sedona Spa with an Oasis Body Butter massage!

By Sadie Thornton
Hilton Sedona Spa
Massage therapist

Class Schedule for September 2009

Click here for the class schedule for September.

Are Your Bicycle Wheels Turning?
Now that the Village of Oak Creek sidewalks and bike lanes are here, are you and your bicycle ready? It is good exercise to wheel around to the food store, our local library or post office, but do you know your bicycle? Are you comfortable shifting gears, especially uphill? Do you know how to change a flat tire? Do you know the rules of the road? Bicycling is so much fun, and a great addition to your workout routine.
Want to re-acquaint yourself with your bike? Throughout the fall and winter, Hilton Spa personal trainer Mary will work with you and your bicycle so you can change a tire, know the rules of the road, and go for a ride after understanding how to use the gears on your bicycle. Plus much more will be covered within an hour and a half workshop scheduled at your convenience with Mary. Workshop cost is $50 per person, maximum of 2 people. If you and your friend sign up together, then it is only $40 per person, a wheeling deal! That may seem like a long ways off, but now is the time to start thinking about what your goal will be for next year’s event. Choosing a race distance or time goal can be a primary goal in itself, or it can be a motivator to stick with a routine that will help you achieve another goal such as weight loss. As in past year’s, the event will include a 5k (3.1 miles). Personal Trainers will once again lead The Hilton Walk/Run Team in training for and achieving your race goals. Please indicate your interest in participating by signing the interest sheet at the Spa Desk or calling Mary or Sherry at 284-6942. Maybe a break from your vacation even? The Hilton Spa Sedona can help with both.

The Hilton Sedona Spa is more than just a Europeanesque spa. They also have a swimming pool, fitness center, whirlpool, sauna, steam room and offer up ultimate relaxation.

I recently visited the spa while staying at the hotel. I had no idea what a treat I was in for. Not only did I get a great massage but I also discovered that with every massage you get to also use their facilities all day if you want. What a bonus.

For folks who live in the area - that makes this the ultimate staycation destination. You can feel like you're getting away from everything with only a short trip to this spa, have a whole day of spoiling and relaxation - but without having to spend the night anywhere or even eat out - which can really cut your vacation expenses, even with the pampering costs. Of course, this would be an adults-only type of staycation. It would also make for a great birthday present for a hard working mama - a day away from the kids, work - all without leaving them too far to feel bad about it. I'll be asking for this mini-getaway for my birthday for sure.

The spa has European features with many American touches. The locker room is spacious, as is the shower area, with the whirlpool right there. The massage waiting room/lounging area is comfortable with water and hot tea for you to sip on as you wait. For the more American aspects - the spa also has a hair and nail salon, yoga classes, and fitness center. You do pay extra for classes and salon services, of course. You can also buy a day pass to the facilities without getting any services if you want.

As for the massage itself, I experienced their 50 minute prenatal massage. It was relaxing to say the least. My massage therapist has been doing prenatal massage for about a decade and knew her stuff. She rubbed away my aches and pains with a nice light lavender oil and gentle but firm touch. I felt refreshed all day.

Check out all the spa services the Hilton Spa Sedona offers HERE. I definitely recommend both the massage and the Hilton's spa as a whole for a way to treat yourself either on vacation or to feel like you've escaped just for the afternoon.

Summertime means........

Summertime means sunbathing, ice-cream, poolside lounging and plenty of outdoor fun. The not so fun side of summer is that UVA and UVB rays in sunlight are damaging to our skin and prolonged exposure can lead to skin cancer and premature aging. Sunscreen is of course a good way to protect your skin from harmful UV rays, but it only works if used correctly. First be sure to check the expiration date. Sunscreen that has gone past it’s “use by “ date will not be as effective. Make sure to apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going outside and reapplying every two hours. Use it all over the body, including on your ears, fingers and toes and use a lip balm with SPF for your lips. Did you know that cotton clothing offers less protection than SPF 15 sunscreen? It’s always a good idea to apply sunscreen even under your T-shirt. Even if it’s waterproof, after swimming and/or sweating be sure to apply more. Use at least an ounce of sunscreen every two hours, and don’t leave it out in extreme heat as that can reduce potency. If you’re wearing bug spray in addition to sunscreen, make sure to use a high SPF because bug spray can decrease the effectiveness. In addition to using your sunscreen properly, those with fair skin, hair and eyes should also take extra precautions. Staying out of the sun from 10am to 4pm, wearing a hat with a wide brim and sunglasses with 100% UV protection can help protect those who burn easily. Last but not least, if you notice any new moles or one that have changed in appearance be sure to see your doctor or dermatologist right away. Enjoy that beautiful sunshine, and BE SAFE!

Sadie Thornton
The Spa at Hilton

Is Your Skin Summer Ready?
Book a Body Renewal today and enjoy the aromatic experience of a gentle orange blossom sugar or ginger lemongrass salt scrub. This treatment includes a warm rain rinse and finishes off with a rich lotion application.

You can also take the experience home with our orange blossom lotion and ginger lemongrass body butter now available in our retail section.

www.hiltonsedonaspa.com
Are your sneakers trashed?

Are your sneakers

While it is true that certain people are at higher risk than others, osteoporosis is a disease that can affect anyone. Some facts from the National Osteoporosis Foundation:
About two million men and eight million women in the United States have osteoporosis.
Some medicines and some diseases can cause bone loss.
Between the ages of 20 and 80, Caucasian women lose about one-third of the bone mineral density in their hip.
Women can lose up to 20 percent of their bone density in the five to seven years after menopause.
Bone loss usually speeds up at midlife in both men and women.
People with osteoporosis cannot feel their bones getting weaker, and many people do not know they have osteoporosis until they break a bone.
Bones break more easily in people with osteoporosis, sometimes from simple actions such as sneezing, hugging or bumping into furniture.
Half of all women and up to one-in-four men older than 50 will break a bone due to osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis and the broken bones it causes can be prevented.
You are never too young or too old to protect your bones. Now is the time to take action.

Renewed for Spring

Hilton Sedona Spa pool: Renewed for spring

<img style="border-color: rgb(0, 0, 128); Spa. After many months of long, loud, and restricting construction, we have finally completed the lap pool rejuvenation.

“With the warm weather upon us, timing couldn’t be better to open our new lap pool to guests,” said Hilton Sedona Spa Director, Katie Admundson. “The improvements have already garnered positive feedback.”

The lap pool area was revitalized with much need updates. The 7,100 plus square foot surface decking was replaced with new concrete, while the pool was re-plastered and retiled. We also replaced the pool drains to meet new safety standards.

The area around the pool was refreshed with modern décor, including new umbrellas, and lounge chairs. The natural hues of the Sedona landscape inspired the pool area’s color palette, which creates a setting that both energizes and relaxes, inviting guests to linger and lounge poolside. We know the area has been approved by all because the poolside fountains have already attracted many birds, while the new outdoor rinse-shower has snagged a guests or two.

The new lap pool is only part of the fabulous Hilton Sedona Spa, which offers full spa, salon, and fitness services. Come visit us to see our rejuvenated look, and stay tuned for upcoming events.

www.hiltonsedona.com

New Team Members to Serve YOU

Meet the Team!
Here at the Hilton Spa we have a great team. This month we’d like to make sure and recognize Brenda Gaudreau and Heidi Mort in our salon!

Brenda is originally from New Jersey but has lived many places including Cape Cod, where she was 5 years ago before moving here to Sedona. She has been with us for the past 5 years and has honed her skin care expertise at many places, including the Catherine Hinds School of Aesthetics in Massachucetts, the New Hampshire School of Advanced Skin Science in New Hampshire and most recently the Dermal Institute in Scottsdale, AZ. Brenda has been practicing the art of skin care for the last 15 years and we are very fortunate to have her on our team!

Heidi is a Tucson native, but she comes to us most recently from Atlanta, Georgia. She moved here 3 years ago in 2006. When she started working here at the spa, her smiling face could be seen at our front desk. Last November she reinstated her nail technician license and began beautifying our guests. Heidi has spent 5 1/2 years, collectively crafting perfect fingers and toes and is a huge benefit to our team!

Laughter Yoga Days

Why “Laughter Yoga Days” at the Hilton Spa?

Laughter is a positive and powerful emotion that becomes even more so when a group of individuals laugh together. During the month of April on the 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th, Wednesdays at 2pm, we as a collective community will participate in laughter exercises and yoga breathing with Certified Laugh Leader, Janet from Flagstaff.

Mark your calendar, bring a friend!

Free and open to the public.

We are designed to laugh, so let’s do it!
